Exotic and near at the same time. Normally, if you want to embark in an exotic trip with a different culture, 10 hour planes are usually involved. Not in Morocco. Take a plane anywhere in Europe, and in 2 or 3 hours you will be in Marrakech, ready to head down to the desert where a completely 19th century lifestyle still exists. Sandy  (but rideable) gravel roads, clay huts and smiling kids awaits for you on every small village, and for 3 days you will be living in a different world…

And there’s no better way to see Morocco than by bicycle!

The destination will be Erfoud, a town providing a great platform for some amazing desert riding.

During our three days on the bikes, we will only see a few cars, we´ll enjoy the quite desert riding through some nice surface roads and amazing dirt tracks and we´ll be delighted with delicious food and accommodation.

Below you will get an impression of the route as explored by a few XPDTN3 members. Remember that with 3Travel, you do not need to carry all your gear on the bike (only what you need for the day) and exact route & accommodations may change based on availability and other circumstances.

STAGE 1 – ERFOUD TO MERZOUGA

On our first contact with the desert, we will ride 84 kilometres and climb only 220 meters.

We’ll begin pedalling along old roads, to then quickly jump into the desert trails.

Early in the afternoon we’ll meet the first sand dunes of the Sahara. They grab the sunlight and light up in the most vibrant shades of orange. We will follow their flanks as we cruise down and into our destination for the night, Merzouga, a little village that has the largest natural underground body of water in Morocco.

STAGE 2 – MERZOUGA TO ERFOUD

We’ll start the day with a tarmac climb, all the way up to Rissani. We will ride into the village through its suburbs and emerge into a bustling marketplace full of little stores, completed with what looks like a donkey parking lot with rows and rows of the animals.

Passed Rissani, we´ll turn right and ride along gravel roads, entering in a natural break in the rock formations. We will climb up on to its back walls from which the views will be expansive and spectacular.

We will navigate through tracks and trails until we reach a main road, which will guide us back to Erfoud.

We’ll have completed almost 88 kilometres and climbed 340 meters through the desert by the time we sit down for a lovely dinner.

STAGE 3 – ERFOUD TO ERFOUD

This last day we’ll visit an extraordinary piece of art. Constructed by German artist Hannesjörg Voth, his work here consists of 3 big structures in the middle of the desert.

The installations are set a long way back from the road, most tourists access them by camel but we will be happy to ride our carbon fiber camels, at times freestyling our path when no clear route can be detected.

On this special riding day, we are going to accumulate 105 kilometres and climb 230 meters.
